ARTIST’S STATEMENT
JUDY ROSS
POINT ROBERTS, WA

I quilt what is around me and I work in series.  In 1992, I moved from Los Angeles to one of America’s few exclaves, a tiny peninsula jutting from British Columbia toward the San Juan Islands.  The world of Point Roberts is oceans, skies, stars, clouds, trees, birds, flowers, raccoons, old houses, boats, and a sprinkling of people who are happy with this kind of isolation.

I am by intention an outsider to the art world and to the quilt world because neither fully claims what I do.   Like conventional quilting, my work is attentive to craft and tradition, but it downplays the historical use of pattern and repetition.  These pieces are  simultaneously 2- and 3-dimensional, and so are like neither conventional painting nor sculpture.
