How To Protest

11 Jan

Let’s say you want to protest something. You find like-minded people who are also affected by this thing you want to protest and you start an organization. Your group holds an event or two, it’s wildly successful.

Then some people join your group, people who are not affected by the thing you’re protesting, the thing you organized around in the first place, and tell you they want to support you but you have to stop organizing around that thing because it offends them. In fact, they’d prefer you never even mention it again. This is what’s known as a hostile takeover attempt.

Do you

A. Tell them “No way! If you don’t like it, you can leave.”
B. Tell them “Oh, we’re terribly sorry we offended you. We will never speak of this again. Also, please give us a list of anything else we might want to organize against that doesn’t affect you, that you find offensive, so we can make sure never to mention any of those things either.”

If you do not understand that the answer is A, will you please get out of organizing while there are still a few of us around who actually understand how this works?

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

In the future, if you try to have an event that isn’t about transgenderism, which is not, as we all know, allowed any longer, the new accepted protocol is to bring a penis hat. Then whenever any transgender person feels the need to disrupt your event, you can accommodate them by insisting that only the disrupter wearing the Talking Penis Hat may speak at any given time. This will ensure that events remain orderly.

This could be expanded upon by discussing financial relationships between involved parties, but in this case I was looking more at this problem in organizing where people think they have to adapt their mission to accommodate the professed feelings of unaffected parties.

As an example: if a feminist organization was confronted by an organization representing women who considered themselves “trans men,” this would play out differently than it would if they were thusly confronted by an organization representing men who considered themselves “trans women,” because women are oppressed upon an axis of actual biological sex and thus have that in common as organizers. It would, in the case of the “trans men” confrontation, behoove the feminist organizers involved to make an especial effort to engage in talks with the “trans men,” where as the “trans women” could be shown the door if they were unwilling to acknowledge and respect the fact that they are not women and that women have a specific set of oppressions to deal with that feminism does and must address.

But it could equally behoove them to set down the swords and talk to right wing women.

Thanks Miep. I am sickened over this transtakeover.
I can handle their ‘Transphobic’ insults, but now I’m a racist and classist too?

Yes. You’re all that now. And also a bigot. And probably xenophobic. And a boring, old world traditionalist. And oh ya, a patriarchy supporting mysogynist. And probably you hate the well being of children.

You can be a male “dominitrix” who doubtless specializes in sexually tormenting women and get asked to speak at the Women’s March, but if you’re a woman who is only ever sexually attracted to other women, then you get to be hounded all over the Internet by creepy little punks on Youtube. Because feminism, right?
